The Ultimate Guide to Wijaya Beach, Thalpe

Everything you need to know about visiting Wijaya Beach (Dalawella Beach) in Sri Lanka. From the famous palm tree swing to swimming with sea turtles in the rock pools.

If you’ve spent any time looking at photos of Sri Lanka’s south coast on Instagram, chances are you’ve already seen Wijaya Beach.

Also known locally as Dalawella Beach, this small stretch of sand just a short tuk-tuk ride from Galle and Unawatuna is famous for two things: a picture-perfect palm tree rope swing and giant sea turtles that swim right up to the shore.

But beyond the photo opportunities, it's also one of the best and safest places to swim on the south coast. Here is everything you need to know about visiting Wijaya Beach in Thalpe.

1. The Famous Palm Tree Swing

Let’s start with the most famous attraction. The Wijaya Beach swing (often called the Dalawella Beach Swing) is tied to a leaning palm tree that stretches out over the Indian Ocean.

It’s located right in front of Dream Cabana. For a small fee (usually around 500 LKR), you can swing out over the crashing waves. The best time to do this is right at sunset when the sky turns a fiery orange and pink, creating the perfect silhouette.

2. Swimming with Sea Turtles

One of the most magical experiences at Wijaya Beach is the chance to see wild sea turtles. Because of the natural rock formations that create a calm lagoon, turtles often come into the shallow waters to feed on seaweed.

If you bring a snorkel (or just stand waist-deep in the water), you can often see them swimming peacefully.

Important: Please remember that these are wild animals. Do not touch them, chase them, or feed them. Simply observe them from a respectful distance.

3. Safe Swimming in the Lagoon

Sri Lanka’s south coast is known for strong currents and rough waves, which can make swimming dangerous in many areas.

However, Wijaya Beach has a natural coral reef that acts as a breakwater. This creates a calm, shallow pool right by the shore, making it one of the safest places for families and children to swim. The water here is crystal clear, and the lack of strong waves makes it incredibly relaxing.

4. Where to Eat: Wijaya Beach Restaurant

Right on the beach, you’ll find the appropriately named Wijaya Beach Restaurant. It’s one of the most popular dining spots in the area, famous for its wood-fired pizzas, fresh seafood, and cold beers.

Sitting on their deck with a pizza and a Lion Beer while watching the sunset is a must-do experience. It does get busy, especially during peak season, so arriving a bit early for sunset drinks is a good idea.

How to Get There

Wijaya Beach is located in Thalpe, just south of Unawatuna.

  • From Unawatuna: It’s a 5-10 minute tuk-tuk ride, which should cost just a few hundred rupees.
  • From Galle: It takes about 15-20 minutes by tuk-tuk from Galle Fort.
  • By Scooter: If you’ve rented a scooter, simply drive south along the main Matara road. You’ll see signs for Wijaya Beach Restaurant and Dream Cabana.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of year to visit the south coast (including Wijaya Beach) is during the dry season, which runs from December to April. During these months, the ocean is calmest and the weather is generally sunny and dry.

If you visit during the monsoon season (May to October), the sea can be much rougher, and the rock pool might not be as calm or clear.

Final Thoughts

Whether you want to get that iconic swing photo, snorkel with turtles, or just eat great pizza by the ocean, Wijaya Beach is a spot you shouldn't miss on your Sri Lankan itinerary. It perfectly captures the laid-back, tropical vibe that makes the south coast so special.
